More about this item:
A mounted photo (12 1/2"x 19") of Chantrell prototype artwork, believed to be a pre-production piece for "The Viking Queen" (1966). The text across the bottom two fingers reads "Forbidden Love", while that to the left of the upper figures is "Rape And Plunder". Whilst the sexual aspect of the film was toned down, in Chantrell's more finished rough (see image below reproduced in Marcus Hearn's book "The Hammer Vault" 2011), the clinching couple mid-left look similar to the figures here at the bottom. The "Forbidden Love" text probably alludes to the affair between the Viking Queen & the Roman leader in the film, whilst both male figures appear to sport Romanesque armour & clothing. An interesting if rather unusual piece of Hammer memorabilia.
